Japanese Calendar & Date Tools

Japan runs the Gregorian year and the imperial era year (和暦) side by side — 令和7年 is 2025. These tools bridge the two, so a date on a form, a licence, or a vehicle registration is easy to read either way.

Frequently asked questions

What year is Reiwa 7 in the Western calendar?

Reiwa 7 is 2025. The Reiwa era began on 1 May 2019 (Reiwa 1), so each Reiwa year is 2018 plus the era year.

What is 元年 (gannen)?

元年 means the first year of an era — written instead of 1年. Reiwa 1 is 令和元年, Heisei 1 is 平成元年.

Why does 1989 map to two eras?

Emperor Shōwa died on 7 January 1989 and Heisei began the next day, so 1989 is Shōwa 64 (1–7 January) and Heisei 1 (8 January onward). The converter shows both.

Which eras are supported?

Meiji, Taishō, Shōwa, Heisei, and Reiwa — 1868 to today. Years before the Meiji era are not supported.
